The Virtues in “October Sky”
In the movie, “October Sky”, the virtues and character traits were numerous. Some like reliability, respectfulness, optimism, and perseverance were bold in displaying themselves in the movie. Many of the traits caused watchers to feel like they knew the characters. “October Sky” is about four boys who attempt to get out the their town’s standard way of living which is coal mining. They show virtues that get them very far towards successful futures.
One of the most important virtues in “October Sky” is determination. The movie has traits of determination and the rewards of determination as well. First, when Homer can not find any books on rockets, he turns to one of the nerdy classmates, Quentin, who with he later becomes friends with. Another time is when Homer’s dad (Mr. John Hickam) throws out Homer’s rocket supplies, in which causes Homer to run out in the rain to retrieve them. The movie also displays determination when Homer and his friends walk all the way to abandoned land just to have a place to fly rockets. This shows determination was a key factor in “October Sky.”
Courage was seen vividly in the movie. Homer’s dad repeatedly saves fellow miners, thus constantly endangering his life. Mr. Hickam does not hesitate to withhold Odell’s stepfather from beating Odell. Homer and his dad don’t see eye to eye. So at the end of the movie, Homer stands up for himself and tells his dad that he has a different plan for his life besides mining. Miss Riley, the science teacher, gathers the courage to go against typical school teaching to teach the group of boys above and beyond. There were many courageous characters in this movie!
Being resourceful was significant in building the rocket in “October Sky". First Homer’s dad lets the boys get some leftover concrete for their rocket. In fact, many people in the town helped to donate supplies to the “rocket boys”. Once to get fuel for the rocket, they get alcohol form Odell’s dad. Another time, the boys need steel to build an improved rocket. They discover an abandoned railroad and use the tracks for steel. The way Homer and his friends are resourceful is extremely motivating.
Whether learning how to be resourceful, courageous, or determination, you usually can’t get along without them. Virtues are not always easy to obtain, but most feel good when they do. October Sky taught me that if you ever want something accomplished use the right types of motivation to pull you through. When Homer needs the motivation throughout the movie, he is always able to find it. Learning the virtues in “October Sky” could very well help or motivate you when you need it the most.
